In the global information society, young people are often the leading innovators in the creation, use, and spread of information and communication technologies. Increasingly, youth are adapting and using these technologies to meet local information and communication needs. Young people are also concerned about the relationship between the information society, and its effects on social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental issues (...).

July 2, 2002: STATEMENT RE PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN IN THE WSIS PREPARATORY PROCESS

Mr. President,

Speaking as a representative of the International Women's Tribune Centre and as a member of the Civil Society group here at this PrepCom, I thank you for this opportunity to speak on behalf of greater participation of women in the preparatory processes for the World Summit on the Information Society.

In addition to the WSIS Gender Caucus formed initially at the Africa Regional Meeting and meeting daily here at this PrepCom, women are gathering at international, regional and national meetings in all geographic world regions during 2002 and 2003 to discuss the importance and implications of the World Summit and to suggest ways to increase gender input into the outcomes documents (...).
